Silverlake Jubilee + The Echo Park Cuban Festival, May 22-23, 2010

Ever since I moved into Silverlake I've significantly amped up my local concert-going, partially in thanks to all the festivals in the neighborhood.  The big music fest that's dominated Silverlake for some time now is the Sunset Junction Festival, but this year there was a new contender in the first annual Silverlake Jubilee. Now that the junction has evolved into a a $20 entrance fee large weekend festival that brings in big name bands from all over, the Jubilee has stepped up to the local music plate.  It's only a $5 donation to enter and they had the most fantastic lineup of LA food vendor trucks I've ever seen along side an impressive array of different local art, jewelry and craft vendors.  What I enjoyed most of all was that they kept the music to local talent and every band performed for free.  And while the bands were fantastic and even the El Cid got in on a little of the showcase action, I think my favorite sight by far was the interactive children's art piece we walked by...
The other event we checked out that day was the Echo Park Cuban Festival.  Quite a bit smaller than than jubilee but just as great a time and at no cost or donation for entrance!  Set along Echo Park lake on a gorgeous day, the Cuban Fest may have only had one stage but the music never let up and neither did the salsa dancing :)  And let's just say that homemade food from your local Cuban festival is probably the most amazing thing ever, no contest (sorry taco trucks).

While the heirloom tomato plant I "adopted" from the sustainable Silverlake area of the jubilee didn't fare so well, I'd say festival day was quite a success.  And to the few Silverlake hipsters living on the street closed off for the jubilee whom I overheard grumbling complaints about their $5 jubilee fee not being waived (did they not read the sign saying "Donation"??) perhaps you can come on down and complain about this unspeakable tragedy to a few Echo Park locals I met walking home from the Cuban Festival.  I'm sure the owner of the fence sign below would be happy to hear your woes...
